THE SPANISH PASSPORT
You will be able to apply for a Spanish passport if you are a foreign resident in Spain with Spanish citizenship. Obtaining a passport allows you to go abroad as an EU citizen and take advantage of any perks that may be available.
The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation is in charge of issuing passports (Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperacion). Spain began issuing biometric passports with an electronic chip holding the passport holder’s important personal information in 2006. The normal biometric passport is a 32-page burgundy booklet that includes the holder’s photo, signature, important personal information, and a unique passport number. Today’s Spanish passports feature the holder’s fingerprints.
There are 4 types of Spanish passports:
A biometric passport issued to citizens for routine travel is known as a standard passport (Pasaporte ordinario).
A collective passport (Pasaporte colectivo) is a three-month limited passport issued for events like as pilgrimages where there is a reciprocal agreement with the destination country.
Government officials and diplomats are awarded diplomatic passports (Pasaporte diplomatico).
Official passports and service passports (Pasaporte oficiales y de servico) are granted to government personnel on official business.
It is possible to become a citizen of Spain without having to obtain a passport. Instead, all Spaniards can apply for a national identity card, known as the Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI). This serves as confirmation of citizenship and allows travel inside the EU, the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland, as well as internationally.
